Lesson 37: Higher Courage: A Call for Prayer and Assistance
By Kentucky Division Chaplain Chaltas

We cannot just sit and watch. We cannot think it is someone else's problem. Our sister states are wounded and are in need of us! As we look in horror at the sheer devastation of Katrina, let us all humble ourselves before the Lord and ask Him to help those that are afflicted by the destruction of their homes, cities and their way of life. Let us resolve ourselves to do everything in our power to come to the aid of our countrymen during their time of need. Let us rally around the flag and offer our support, keeping in mind the words of General Lee after Gettysburg, "God is our only refuge and our strength. Let us humble ourselves before Him. Let us confess our many sins, and beseech Him to give us a higher courage, a purer patriotism and more determined will." Our brothers and sisters need us and we must do all according to God's will to help those in dire straits. Let us offer a daily prayer and back up the prayer in faith that our gracious God will do for His children what we as mere mortals cannot do: He offers eternal salvation and shelter in the storm. But let us also show our Christian Character by sending whatever we can to assist the effort. Let us open our hearts as well as our doors to the refugees in the stricken land and offer ourselves, as did our ancestors following the war, to the cause of rebuilding lives. So please, your General begs you to extend the hand of brotherly love by contacting those agencies that you support and ask what you can do to help. May God bless our Southern Brothers and Sisters during this time of chaos. Have faith and hold on to hope; for He will come to you...I Remain Your Obedient Servant in Christ.
