Lesson 272 You Won't "Wet" Me

Army of Tennessee Chaplain David Chaltas

YOU WON’T ‘WET’ ME

There comes a time in a man’s life when he becomes reflective of yesteryear. I encountered one of those moments this week and thought I would share it with you. It deals with being a parent and the lesson for life we all must learn.

One of my fondest memories of being a father is of my daughter when she was learning to talk. She always had the sweetest voice but her r and l sounds were last to develop and she would talk with a slight lisp. Her r and l would be a ‘w’ sound. I thought that was the cutest thing ever, except when she wanted something.

I remember so many times that little precious girl wanting to do something but was simply too ‘wittle’ and I would have to tell her no. Her little jaw would start quivering and she gave me those puppy dog eyes that melt a father’s heart. Oh how I wanted to give in but I knew it was for her good to say no. The tears would begin to flow and I found myself so filled with love and the desire to say go ahead but again I knew it was for her own good.

I recall a time when she wanted to do something and she looked at me. She simply stared for a moment, as tears welted in her eyes. She burst out in tears and began crying. I rushed over to her and picked her up. I asked her why she was crying. She simply pointed outside and said, “You won’t ‘wet’ me.” Then she would hug me with a loving embrace and sob, not knowing I wouldn’t ‘wet’ her because I saw potential danger or no good in what she desired to do.

It was then I understood the sheer power of my words and that she knew the difference between right and wrong and that her father was ultimately in control. I will never forget those words as long as I live and every time I think of those precious moments, I break down and cry.

How I wished to give her everything, just like I wanted to my son. But I knew that sometimes the best for the child is not what they want but what they need. Our heavenly Father wishes to meet all our needs if we lean on Him. Yes, there will be times that he tells us no, but His heart is moved just as surely as mine was when I heard my daughter’s words or saw her reaction to the word ‘no’.

Sometimes in life we do not know what is best for us for we cannot see the dangers or what lies around the bend. God can and He watches over us with great fervor. He has counted the hairs on our head and knows when the sparrow falls (Matthew 10: 29-31). His eyes are on the sparrow therefore I know He watches me. He saw tomorrow, yesterday! He is our protector and, as I am more than willing to give up my life for my son and daughter, He GAVE His life for me.

Whenever He won’t ‘wet’ you do something, do yourself a favor and surrender to His wisdom. Fall into His loving arms and feel the protection of the ages. Matthew 11: 28 will provide us with that comfort when God won’t ‘wet’ us. “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

Someday friend the turbid veil will be lifted and we shall see His reason, His purpose, and His plan for us. While we dwell upon this earth we must accept God’s will and rejoice even when He won’t ‘wet’ us do something we want to do. Our needs WILL be met according to the riches of His glory. So, don’t sweat the ‘wet’ and lean upon the everlasting arms. Praising Him for the ‘no’ and not ‘wetting’ me do certain things in my life, I remain the old general
