Lesson 50: Laus Deo

Kentucky Chaplain David Chaltas

As we wade into the New Year I think that the Latin phrase above is most appropriate. Each New Year we begin with resolutions that usually end in disappointment, when we fail as human beings to achieve our goals. I wonder how many of our ancestors, while encamped during the winter, reflected upon what was important in their lives and what they could do to better themselves. Do you think such questions as how much weight to lose, or what new clothes to purchase, entered their minds? I can only imagine that they reflected upon their soul's condition and survival. We are a pampered nation. Materialistic goods that can dampen the spirit and take our minds off of what is truly important surround us. What is really important to us? This we know: all the money, material, and power cannot offer us happiness. It only buys us bigger toys. So we must reflect back on the old path and realize what is essential in our lives. Hence, the term Laus Deo must be our first resolution and constant reminder of what really is the essence of our existence. What does it mean? I will give you a hint. It is inscribed upon the top of the 555' 5.125" Washington Monument and faces the east. It is the cornerstone of our faith. It is our very foundation that is being whittled away as we speak. "Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain. (Psalm 127: 1)

Our ancestors were not ashamed, afraid, or embarrassed to use the term. They knew that for our country to survive we must have faith in God our Creator. Our founding fathers stepped boldly from the ranks and declared their faith and belief in Christ as their Founding Father. One can readily find where their allegiance was, and upon reading their statements realize that they were believers in Laus Deo. Should we not follow the old path and embrace with our total being the concept of Laus Deo? Have you figured out the term yet? If not, you can go to the following website and not only learn of the importance of the two Latin words but also discover the truth as to what our country was founded upon, and must remain true to, in order to survive http://www.palletmastersworkshop.com/lausdeo.html.

Revelation 19:5 states that a voice came from the throne, saying, "Praise our God, all you His servants and those who fear Him, both small and great! Let us sing our praises each and every day throughout the New Year. Peace be unto you as I remain your obedient servant, The Old General

LAUS DEO
Facing east is the ancient direction of prayer, and the source of the verb "orient"
Traditional churches are still planned with the sanctuary oriented to the East
