Lesson 91: Angels Unaware

   Kentucky Chaplain David Chaltas

She was in a hurry. The road was narrow and unfamiliar but it would cut off eight miles to her destination. As she turned onto the two lane graveled road, she noticed that her gas tank light came on but she was in a hurry. Surely there would be a gas station somewhere on the way or she might even make it to her house. As she traveled, she could not help but note how desolate the area was and how winding the road became. Maybe this was not such a great idea. After all, she had heard of this area being the poor side of town and that it had shady characters that lived there. But she was safe as long as she kept driving and stayed in her car.

It was then that her vehicle started missing and to her horror, died on a small narrow mound. She coasted out of harms way and came to rest right beside the highway. She tried to start it but the engine only grinded. She had run out of gas in the middle of nowhere. It was too dark to see twenty feet in front of her. Her cell phone didn’t work and she dared not to get out of her car. Surely someone would drive by and notice that she was having car trouble and offer assistance.

Five long minutes turned into ten, as she sat there frozen in time. It was then that she noted a man walking. Even though it was dark, his appearance drew an uneasy sigh from her. He was grungy looking, with a ball hat and a dirty stained T-shirt. And he was coming right toward her! She noted that he began walking faster and to her shock he began running in her direction. She made sure that the door was locked. When it was obvious that he was not going to stop and was excited about finding her stranded, she began honking her horn and yelling that the police would soon be there. The man would not leave and started beating on her door and shouting. After what seemed to be an eternity the man slipped into the shadows, as the lady cried and thanked God for His protection. But her relief was short lived, for out of the darkness once again he came. This time he had a large metal object in his hand. The man immediately went to her window and shattered it. She ducked in the seat just in time. He unlocked the door and grabbed her leg, as she fought the attack by this assailant. At one juncture, she actually kicked him in the face, breaking his nose. She felt his blood pouring unto her bare skin. But the man would not be swayed. Though she fought desperately to wart off her attacker, he prevailed and dragged her kicking and screaming twenty yards from her car.

It was then that she felt the rubble beneath her body and saw a bright light coming through a passage. The light revealed that she had allowed her car to rest on a railroad crossing. As the train crashed through her car, she realized that the man that she had resisted with all her power had just saved her life. He was her angel unaware.

How many times have we struggled with the will of God? How many times have we been spared by the direct intervention of an angel unaware? How many times have we been like Jennifer Johnson and fought with every fiber in our body the one thing that would save us? Can you feel their presence? Can you hear His voice? Softly and tenderly He is calling and He sends his love to us through Angels unaware. I Remain Your Obedient Servant in Christ, The Old General
