Lesson 96: On Being Still

   Kentucky Chaplain David Chaltas

“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10 (King James Version)

Have you ever been so busy in your own little world of self-importance that you forgot the simplicity of God’s love and commandments? Have you ever found yourself worried to death about something that is yet to come to pass? Have you ever wondered why God commands us to be still and know that He is God?

Hunters know that you must be patient while you wait on your game. Fishermen know that there are several hours spent for those strikes that come. Rides such as the ones at Disney World require standing in line for hours for a brief interlude of excitement. During those times, can we not reflect upon God and exalt Him?

Experts state that the first fifteen minutes of our morning can determine our day. It sets our frame of mind. Sometimes though, we forget the Founder of the Feast. HE is the expert and in His love letter to His children, HE tells us to be still.

Try this in the morning. Instead of jumping out of bed and rushing through the morning ritual of life, take the first fifteen minutes of the morning following the mandates of our Lord to, “Be still, and know that I am God”. As you get up, thank Him for that very fact. As you go out on the porch, deck or recline in your chair, reflect upon the goodness of God. As you walk outside, gaze into the world and rejoice. For another day has been given unto you, filled with possibilities and, yes, even problems that are opportunities for your growth.

A dear friend of mine told me that he couldn’t wait to jump out of bed and see what was in store for him that day. He said that he goes outside and sits for 15 minutes, praising God for the day and reflecting upon his responsibilities as a Christian, while he simply remains still. Talk about starting off with a positive attitude! By being still and knowing that He is God, we refill our spirit. The principle is the same as offering water to a thirsty man. It replenishes the body. Being still replenishes and refreshes the soul. We all know that there are no problems on this planet that the Lord can’t handle, if you seek him earnestly. His guidance each day will allow you to find your purpose in life according to His divine will. Remember, God is good, all the time: All the time, God is good. Be blessed this day as you remain still and allow God to do for you what you cannot do for yourself.

Your obedient servant in Christ, The Old General
