Enlisted in the Army of the Confederate States at West Liberty, Kentucky, in September, 1861, as a private and was soon after appointed Chaplain of the 5th Kentucky Infantry, Marshall's Brigade Army of Southwestern Virginia. He participated in all the engagements of his regiment and discharged the duties of his office until October, 1862, at which time he was honorably discharged from the service.
