It was a time of great anguish, a time of brother against brother, friend against friend; a nation divided. It has inspired more romantic notions about a time of chivalry and honor in war and yet brought home the reality of all its horrors. The great American Civil War, a paradox of tears and triumph that, like the phoenix, had to be sacrificed to rise from the ashes. For over four years, the Fading of the Grey was seen and immortalized by the sheer majesty/tragedy of their determination and chivalry. Never before had a force from within emerged declaring freedom from its oppressors and states rights, resulting in the formation of a confederacy, so outnumbered, outgunned and out manufactured by a superior force and yet with such resolve, determination, and equal belief in their cause that it staggers the imagination. It captured the human spirit and imagination. The stories of humanity and great moments of heroism, though filled with all the carnage and bloodshed, are forever etched on the walls of history as well as our hearts.

The intent of this book is to share with its readers segments of famous victories, human tragedies, as well as the little known incidents that make studying this unique period in American history such a moving experience. Hopefully the tidbits (I have only scratched the surface) will entice the reader to expand his/her reading on the topics of interest. I have long been fascinated with stories regarding the civil war and my passion has turned into a love affair upon the discovery that indeed I had several great grandfathers and relatives that served for their cause during the four-year period unique in the annals of American History. On my first visit to the hallowed ground of Manassas, Gettysburg, Antietam, Cedar Creek, New Market, and upon the road to Appomattox, I was so overwhelmed with the emotions of the sights, my thoughts, and imaginings that I could not speak without choking on my words. My eyes bled gray and blue tears humbly yet freely; proudly expressing my gratitude and sorrow for those so gallant in their resolve that they were willing and indeed give their lives for their beliefs. We must not forget the lessons of the past and must remember above all that we are all Americans, sharing the honor of an era that shall never pass this way again but dwells within us, like a small voice, constantly reminding us of our heritage.

I dedicate my endeavors to my wonderful Creator, who has placed within me a burning desire to seek knowledge and to record it. To my family that have endured countless hours deprived of my presence in order for me to follow my passion, I give thanks and gratitude for their support and understanding. To my friends that have encouraged me and pushed me to continue when the task seemed to be overwhelming, I will be forever grateful. For my mentor, Richard Marion Smith, that contributed to the format and offered his expertise, I express my heartfelt appreciation. For my ancestors that rode with the 13th Kentucky Cavalry during this paradoxical period, I pray that my efforts are worthy of your sacrifices and bring a glimmer of understanding to those that are of a different era. May God bless you as you explore the rich history of a time that can only be relived within the confines of our mind. I present for your consideration, The Fading of the Grey.
