The medallion shown above is of General Lee and the staff officers who were with him at Appomattox Court House on Sunday, April 9, 1865, when he surrendered. An eyewitness account of that surrender is here

In researching information on Major Giles B. Cooke, I came upon this medallion on this page . The author had received a image of this medallion from Mr. Mikel Uriguen, who maintains the Generals of the American Civil War website, Mr Uriguen was quoted as writing:

The second is a picture of a military medallion with the pictures of the members of the staff of R. Lee. This picture appears in one of the volumes of "The Photographic History of the CW"…. There is a reference to Giles Cooke: "These twelve members of General Robert E. Lee´s staff surrendered with him at Appomattox Court House, and with him signed a parole drawn up by Grant, to the effect that they would not take up arms against the United States until or unless they were exchanged. This military medallion was devised by the photographer Rockwell during General Lee´s stay at Richmond in April, 1865. These facts are furnished by Major Giles B. Cooke (No. 12, above), who had verified writing General Lee himself after the surrender". [www.swcivilwar.com/RussellResearchProject.html]

There is a similar medallion at in Lee Chapel at Washington and Lee College, Lexington, Virginia, that shows President Lee with his faculty. One may see it in the museum below the Chapel.
