What Must He Think of Us

Tis' brother fighting brother.
What must He think of us?
Trying to kill each other.
What must He think of us?
The daughter hates her mother!
What must He think of us?
A nation torn asunder.
What must He think of us?

Nation fighting nation!
What must He think of us?
From Prayers to annihilation.
What must He think of us?
We've destroyed His creations.
What must He think of us?
We're losing our salvation!

We both pray He's on our side.
What must He think of us?
We ask Him to be our guide.
What must He think of us?
His Commands we won't abide.
What must He think of us?

As we watch each other die.
What must He think of us?
As we make the bullets fly.
What must He think of us?
As we yell our battle cry.
What must He think of us?

Both believe that they are right.
What must He think of us?
We're fighting with all our might.
What must He think of us?
Scared to go to sleep at night.
What must He think of us?

Hostilities in His name.
What must He think of us?
No one will accept the blame.
What must He think of us?
He asks if we have no shame?
That's what He thinks of us.

For the longest time I wondered what must our Good Designer make of war. Especially when we fight one another in His name. And then comes the War of Wars pitching family members against each other! This poem, inspired by a line written by Abe Lincoln asks the question of what must He think of us? God must have covered His eyes and ears with a turbid vale in order not to allow the horror of warfare to reach His dwelling place. But I am assured that His mercy and goodness intervened and provided comfort for the fallen and mercy for those that truly sought Him. We can never phantom the greatness of God but we must ask ourselves in perilous times just what must He think of us?

"We, on our side, are praying to Him to give us victory, because we believe we are right; but those on the other side pray to Him, too, for victory, believing they are right. What must He think of us?" Abe Lincoln
