I was Born and raised in Rowan Co. KY, a community called Clearfield, just southeast of Morehead, on Dry Creek Rd. Thru my growing up, i always listened to stories that my Grandparents would tell about there Parents and Grandparents. I became very interested in the Civil War at a very young age. My Grandma would let me bang on empty lard buckets. I would tie a string on the bucket and march up and down the road. When i was growing up my Grandpa told me a story about his Great Uncle Joab Crawford, who fought for the Union in the 24th Ky. Inf. Co. D from Fleming Co. (Hillsboro) KY. It was told that at the Battle of Shiloh, the colors were falling several times, at one time Joab started picking up pieces of Old Glory and carrying them with him as they charged the Confederate forces. When Joab died at the age of 34, that when they prepared his body for burial, they had counted several musket ball scars.
Joab is buried in the Fairview Cem. just outside of a small community called Grange City.I did however get to see the Springfield rifle that Joab carried, who knows where it is now. He as well as many other Union commrads are buried there. His Capt. George R Barber is also buried in the same Cemetery. My Great Great Grandfather Leander Crawford and another Brother Alfred Crawford were enlisted for 5 months with the Fleming Co. State Guard. Alfred is buried in the Fairview Cem. as well. Leander, my GG Grandfather is buried in Rowan Co. KY in the Bentley Cem. I have my GG Grandfathers straight razor he carried with him for the short 5 months he was enlisted.
As far as my Confederate Heritage, William DeBord was all that was mentioned from my Grandma.
I am a retired volunteer firefighter with the Morehead Fire Dept. Have been in the emergency services since 1987. I am also a member of the SUVCW with the Elijah P. Marrs Camp # 5. I have been a traveling musician (Drummer) , School Bus Driver, and Truck Driver, before my current job as a wastewater treatment plant operator with the City of Morehead. I married my Lovely Wife on Sept, 25 2004. We now reside in her hometown of Hillsboro, KY.
