Our year has started off with sadness, as we feel
the sting of death once more among our brothers. It is with great sadness that I mu=
st
report the loss of John Wesley Roark and Ben Buster Taylor. Both loved their heritage and were=
so
proud of our endeavors. Thoug=
h both
were in failing health they never once failed in supporting us through their
wishes for our success. They =
will
be missed and yet another chair is vacant at the family table. The families of both appreciate yo=
ur
outpouring of love and support. I
shall never forget all that was done for Brother John.
The election is upon us and let us to remember t=
hat
we are all brothers. No matte=
r the
election outcome, the candidates’ WILLING to serve puts us in a Win-W=
in
situation. Vote your heart and
think of what is best for the camp.
Gentlemen, voting our conscience will sustain us. The voting process will follow last
year’s procedures and be in accordance with Robert’s Rules of
Order. It is my understanding=
that
a question came up regarding the purchase of the plaques for the Christmas
dinner. For purposes of
clarification, the plaques were not purchased with camp money, as I felt it=
the
duty and responsibility of the Commander to purchase them in line with his =
service
and commitment. On behalf of =
the
camp, I have done so for three years without cost to our organization.
I am appointing a Book Review Committee.<=
span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> It is not a standing committee but=
one
appointed to review our document prior to publishing. Those willing to serve will
review/critique/revise Confederate Kin II.=
The draft manuscript is to be brought back to the February meeting a=
nd I
will take your suggestions under advisement, as I revise for March 1, 2008,
publication. The book has alr=
eady
been formatted (6x9 inches, with 0 gutter and 1.25 borders). I ask the camp to submit pictures =
that
we can select for the front cover, keeping in mind the theme of this series=
.
The Public Relations Committee is in need=
of
funds in order to complete their mission.&=
nbsp;
I am asking that the camp consider giving $200.00 towards an ad camp=
aign
for Confederate History Month, Black History Month, and also placing
information regarding Native Americans and other minorities that served the
cause. The Committee is to su=
bmit
in writing their ad, lesson, literature, etc. to the Executive Committee. In turn, the E. C. will review/rev=
ise as
necessary prior to the Commander approving for publication. The guidelines of the PRC are
attached.
We are in need of men willing to assist in placi=
ng
the sentry at Pound Gap and at the Sandlick Cemetery. The statues are already purchased =
and we
are ready to build the platform to house them. If you wish to assist in that wort=
hy
project, see Richard Brown or myself.
Let us remember the LEE/JACKSON dinner hosted by=
the
5th KY and Arthur Camp this coming weekend. It will be an evening of great foo=
d, a
grand fellowship and a great time to continue expanding our brother and
sisterhood of like-minded people.
This Saturday, Butternut, General Jackson and General Pendleton will=
be
bringing the MTN Howitzer to Whitesburg. They have refurbished the cannon a=
nd
trailer. I remain your obedie=

From the Adjutant=

Desk
December 20, 2007
The Colonel Ben E. Caudill Camp No. 1629 of the =
Sons
of Confederate Veterans has 78 members paid per my records. Unfortunately, I just received a p=
urged
roster from National Headquarters and it shows 66 members. A week before I received this new
roster, I called National Headquarters as they had not sent me an updated
roster since August plus I had noticed they had not cashed any checks sent =
to
them since October of 2007. B=
ryan
Sharp, National Membership Coordinator, told me they were way behind as the
secretary for the Army of Tennessee Division had quit and no one replaced
her. I told him that no check=
s had
been cashed and he said they would get to us as soon as possible. Apparently they filed the first ba=
tch of
members that had paid that I had sent to them on the first of November (66
members) after my call. All o=
thers
sent since then have not been added yet.&n=
bsp;
It is hard for me to believe that someone is not doing any better th=
an
that with the record keeping. Mr.
Sharp said that the secretary from the Army of Northern Virginia was trying=
to
catch up the paper work for our division and were having to work Saturdays =
to
do so.
I wish to thank all compatriots of the Camp who
expressed their concern for the death of our fellow member, John Roark (the
brother to Commander Chaltas).
Several members of the camp attended a graveside service held for Jo=
hn
at the Lewis Back Cemetery on Wednesday, January 9, 2008. Also, several members of the
Arthur Camp attended as well. Though
John was not healthy enough to attend our meetings, Commander Chaltas infor=
med
me that his brother kept up with the activities of the camp by our website =
and
by magazine articles.
I thought the Camp’s Christmas Dinner went
very well despite starting off on a rocky foot. Though the turkey and fixings from=
IGA
didn’t show up due to some kind of screw up on their part, the camp e=
nded
up coming out cheaper by purchasing the food from Lee’s Famous Recipe
Chicken. Everyone seemed to g=
et
plenty to eat and the auction raised a decent amount of money for the
camp. The election nomination=
s went
very good as well. Only one
position, 1st Lieutenant Commander, had two men nominated. The camp is in a no-lose situation
though, as both men, Tabby Back and Manton Ray Cornett, are great
candidates. The other positio=
ns
only had one person nominated but write-in votes will be accepted.
The material needed to place the statue of the
Confederate infantryman beside the Pound Gap Monument has been purchased. The blocks, mortar, cement,
platform (purchased from Deanna’s Designs) and form material was
purchased from Builder’s Supply and is stored at R.R. Crawford
Engineering in Whitco. The fo=
rms
have been built and will be filled with concrete soon. The second form is for the stone w=
ith
the saying from the Confederate Monument at Arlington. Appalachian Monument will make this
engraving. This stone will be
placed alongside the statue. <=
/span>
Dean and Nina Cornett have taken the preliminary
brochure that Commander Chaltas and myself have worked on to a friend of th=
eirs
who is an ad consultant. The
brochure highlights the Pound Gap Monument, the Sandlick Monument and the
Veterans Museum. I believe the
brochure would greatly help inform the public of the rich War Between the
States heritage that Letcher County contains. Every three months, the sign-=
in
booklet placed at the Pound Gap Monument has to be replaced. There are more than two thousand
visitors that took the time to sign in and I am sure many more have not sig=
ned. This many visitors without any
advertisement or signs that make people aware of the monument!
Faron and I are still working on finding the
gravesites of Revolutionary War soldier, Private Abraham Childers, and two =
of
Caudill’s men, Sergeant Abram Childers and Corporal James Childers. Abraham is the grandfather to Abra=
m and
James and family records state that the three are buried near each other. The two Confederates were killed d=
uring
the war, Abram in 1863 and James in 1864.&=
nbsp;
Using old deeds and patents, we have narrowed the search area down f=
rom
the mouth of Wolfpen Branch up to and including Big Doubles Branch on Burge=
ys
Creek in Knott County. When one is found, three tombstones can be set! Local residents inform us that the=
re are
approximately four cemeteries that are likely candidates.
On a side note, I was wondering if any of the ca=
mp
members would like to put together an order for more of the Southern Cross =
of
Honor monuments. As well as p=
lacing
the monuments at ancestor’s graves, could we place one beside the Unk=
nown
Confederate Prayer stone in the Sandlick Cemetery and another beside the
Confederate statue at Pound Gap Monument?&=
nbsp;
Also, if anyone knows of a cemetery that needs to be cleaned up, now=
is
the time of year to do it. &nbs=

Chaplain’s Comments
As this New Year starts, we need to ask ourselves
what can I do to make it a better year for God and the SCV? We need to start by not looking at
others, but looking at ourselves.
What could I do to be a better person? How could I make a difference=
in
the SCV? How could I get clos=
er to
God? My Bible lesson has been=
on
forgiveness. One of the hardn=
ess
things for a Christian to realize is that we have to forgive before our
Heavenly father will forgive us.
We learn this in Mathew 6:14, “For if ya forgive men their
trespasses your Heavenly Father will also forgive you.” Mrs. Jefferson Davis said it best,=
“I forgive them (Yankee=
) for
what they done and as for me I have done nothing to be forgiven
for.” Let’s pray =
God
will help us to have that forgiving heart.=
If you have any prayer request, email them to me at the5thkycampkettl=

Prayer Line
Let us praise God for a miracle in the healing of
Jeff Smith! He is home and
recovering daily. He is regai=
ning
his mobility and memory after a terrible accident resulting in the Doctors
giving him up for dead. Pray =
for
Commander Don Poynter’s health.
He is currently hospitalized in Corbin. Offer up our prayers for
compatriot Jimmy Reed, as he undergoes surgery for his hearing. Let us continue praying for Libby =
Smith,
Colonel Ronnie Robinson, Doug Taylor’s family, Duck Day’s family
for their loss, General Parsons, Gary Holt, John Peck, Sheila Hudson, Margie
Watts, Grady Lee, Carlos Brock, Willis Stong’s wife and family along =
with
Manton Ray Cornetts. Pray for=
Eric
Back’s family as well as the friends of John Roark. Ask for healing with Ms. Nancy that
works at the Pine Mountain Regional Library. She has cancer. We are in of prayers for little Georgianah Marie, the newborn of Commander Burrow. She is having breathing complicati=
ons. <=
/span> Let us continue to pray for the thr=
ee
young boys that came requesting I prayer for them at Blue Springs. Ask for unspoken prayers to be ans=
wered,
as our God knows our needs prior to asking. Pray for our beloved Cliff Howard
(President Davis). Remember t=
o pray
for Big Tree and his father, Mrs. Cantrell, and others that give of their t=
ime
as living historians. Pray fo=
r all
the infirmed, those alone and needing the touch of the Master’s hand,=
as
well as our troops that guard freedom’s door. Pray for the unity of the camp and=
that
in all things we work for the glory of God and with a humbled spirit. Let us continue to serve the cause=
of
Christ and pray for the Ben Caudill Ministries as we carry on the tradition=
of
our ancestors. Chaplains

Before the meeting was brought to order, it was
noted that the turkey, dressing, gravy, rolls and eating utensils that were=
to
be brought by Pic Pac in Isom had not arrived. After several phone calls confirme=
d that
the order was not coming, Glenda and Evelyn went to Lee’s Fried Chick=
en

bought
ice, soft drinks, napkins, forks, spoons and dishes. Upon their return, Wayne Watts cal=

Back opened with prayer. Comm=
ander
Chaltas explained to the crowd that the food from Pic Pac was not coming for
some unknown reason but that the camp had purchased chicken instead (everyo=
ne
had brought side dishes, including a ham).=
The commander bragged on the camp for their accomplishments of the
previous year. Adjutant Brown=
then
read the Christmas Day entry of 1864 from Captain Edward Guerrant’s
journal, telling of the hardships encountered by the Confederate Army
(including Caudill’s Army).
Commander Chaltas then said that the minor inconvenience of our food=
not
arriving on time was nothing as compared to what our soldiers go through, p=
ast
and present. Chaplain Back ga=
ve an
inspirational speech and story about handling hardships. It was noted that a
quorum was in attendance and the camp could conduct business. Nominations for camp officers was
held. Okie Blair nominated Da=

held at
the next camp meeting on January 17, 2008.=
The nominations will be posted on the camp’s website and write=
in
votes accepted.
Commander Chaltas then turned the meeting over to
Chaplain Tabby Back to give blessing for the food that was to be eaten. Everyone got in line and made thei=
r own
plates. Plenty of good food w=
as
presented. After everyone had=
eaten
their meal and desserts, Commander Chaltas gave out some door prizes. He then recognized the empty chair=
s and
explained to the crowd about the meaning.&=
nbsp;
He then read aloud the list of names of camp members who have passed
on. Each member them identifi=
ed
himself and gave the Ancestral Roll Call.&=
nbsp;
Sandy Wright announced that Charlie Whitaker was teaching square dan=
ce
lessons that could be used in Civil War Balls. The cost is $5.00 and will be
held on the 2nd and 4th Saturday at the Calvary
College. Kenny Cantrell annou=
nced
that youth was our future and that everyone should encourage more young peo=
ple
to be interested in their ancestors.
Commander Chaltas then presented nice plaques (pins had been ordered=
but
did not come in) to the four members of the camp that originally started it=
13
years ago; Raymond Isaacs, Kenny Cantrell, Richard Smith and Faron
Sparkman. Raymond accepted his
plaque and told of the history of the camp, saying after finding fifty grav=
es
of soldiers to place tombstones on, he would never have dreamed we would no=
w be
nearing the one thousand mark. An
auction of items donated by camp members was then held. After paying Commander Chaltas bac=
k $84
for the chicken from Lee’s and $32 to David Brown for plates and
etcetera, the camp made approximately $200 (We owe the Extension Office $50=
for
use of the facilities). Kenny
Cantrell asked that Richard obtain a certificate for Mike Baker as his had
never came in. A young man,
Jonathan King, asked to join the camp through his ggg grandfather, Private =
Keel
Baker. The next meeting will =
be
held at the Letcher County Vocational School on January 17,
2008. Meeting adjourned.
