The General= ’s Dispatch
Though
the month of February brought uncertain weather and the cancelation of our
meeting, it did not deter the momentum of the camp. The Hallowed Ground Stone Setting =
Crew
were hard at work, catching the sunny days between the snow and rain, sitti=
ng
stones and researching WITH some major finds. More on that follows under the Lt.
Commander’s report. The
prototype of CONFEDERATE KIN II is in and on display. We are revising for the final proo=
f and
should have it on line with delivered orders by April 2, 2008. We are NOW accepting material for
Confederate Kin III, with the understanding that it takes about a year to 14
months to have a product ready for distribution. The Caudill Flag with the names of=
those
that have gone before is being embroidered and should be ready for all
meetings, events and special occasions honoring past members. The weather is settling and it is =
time
to set a date for the trash pickup at the Gap and to place the Sentry Monum=
ent. The Jefferson Davis pins are
available. Note that they were
designed by Cumberland Brigade Lt. Commander Taylor. Our thanks go out to Danny for his
contribution in honoring Jefferson Davis on his 200th birthday.<=
span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> The idea of having a dedication an=
d a
memorial to Jefferson Davis at the Gap was brought to us by Glenn Brown.

From the Qu= ill of the Lt. Commander:
The winter has seemed lo=
ng, if
not severe, and made to seem longer by the cancellation of our February SCV
meeting. Thankfully, winter is
officially over, and we can now get back to business as usual. We can be grateful that Faron, Car=
los,
Willis, and their associates have been able to continue their research into=
the
lives of our Confederate ancestors in spite of foul weather. And, there have been infrequent
opportunities when they were able to venture outside to verify their findin=
gs. Such was the occasion when the pri=
vilege
was offered to accompany Carlos and Willis into the hills and hollers of
Quicksand Creek in Knott and Breathitt Counties. We were there to relocate the Conf=
ederate
grave marker of Shadrack Ellsberry Stacy.&=
nbsp;
For some time, his stone had been set in the Bradley Cemetery at Dec=
oy,
but more recent evidence from his descendant family had led us to search fo=
r a
Smith-Stacy Cemetery somewhere nearby.&nbs=
p;
After retrieving the stone and making a couple of inquiries, we clim=
bed
a hill off Indian Grave Road and found more than what we were hoping to
find. Not only did we find the
grave of Private Stacy and his wife, but we were somewhat surprised to find=
the
family grave marker for a Richard Smith with dates that were appropriate for
the Civil War era. Later find=
ings
revealed that it was Private Richard Smith, formerly of Perry County, and
previously thought to be buried in the Millertown Cemetery on Lost Creek. After a trip to Lost Creek, to ret=
rieve
Private Smith’s stone, and a trip to Whitesburg, to have Rokie correct
the dates for both Smith and Stacy, we are hopeful that the stones for Priv=
ates
Stacy and Smith have correct dates and will soon be set in their proper pla=
ces,
just a few feet apart, where these two brave souls have been at rest for ne=
arly
a hundred years. While on
Quicksand, we searched for, and found, the grave for Second Corporal Benjam=
in
Smith, along with the grave of his wife, Matilda. Benjamin was Richard Smith’s
brother, another reason why they might have lived and died in the same gene=
ral
area. It is a real pleasure to
watch Carlos with his chalk and Willis with his rods, uncovering the past, =
right
before your eyes!
And, that’s not al=
l;
Carlos has gone ‘back to the books’ and learned that Privates
George and Jacob Bradley, previously unmarked, are buried in this same area=
, in
the George Bradley Cemetery in Breathitt County. So, when all the stones are ready,=
we
will have a very full day of stone-setting on Quicksand Creek. All five stones will have to go up=
hill,
and two will have to be pulled though the timber with ropes, another area of
expertise possessed and willingly shared by your Second Lt. Commander, Will=
is
Strong. The reenactment seaso=
n is
right around the corner, with one of the first real good opportunities comi=
ng
on April 26 and 27 at Cumberland Gap.
The members of the Caudill Battery would like for as many of our camp
members as possible to become certified as ‘cannoneers’ and sho=
w up
to help us rattle a few more windows.
Training and certification will be available at the School of the
Company to be held on April 19 and 20.&nbs=
p;
Give it some thought; if you’re tired of marching and getting
killed, we usually have a great view of the battle with few disadvantages.<=

From the Adjutant’s Desk
The
Colonel Ben Caudill Camp No. 1629 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans has 79
members as of this time. If a=
nyone
needs a new membership card, just let me know. Unfortunately the last meeting of =
the
camp was cancelled due to inclement weather. The terrible ice storm predicted f=
or
that Thursday never materialized but there was some bad weather. Many members had already ann=
ounced
that they would not be able to attend as they would be out of town. The weather has still been too bad=
to
have a working at the Pound Gap Monument.&=
nbsp;
Every weekend seems to be miserable weather. With spring now approaching, hope =
is
that we will soon be able to place the new statue on the mountain. Also, the Letcher County Fiscal Co=
urt
announced that after the money for the Litter Abatement Program is used this
year, there will be no more funding for it. Our camp needs to have a litter pi=
ckup
or two to raise money. The co=
unty
pays $100 per mile for the cleanups.
Faron and I visited the so-called Slave Cemetery at the head of Perk=
ins
and Wolfpen Branches. The cem=
etery
is in bad need of being cleaned up. &=
nbsp;
There is a lot of saplings and brush growing on the graves. These graves were moved here from =
the
mouth of Breeding Branch of Breeding Creek when the new highway was built
through the area in 1968. It =
was
thought all of the graves were moved there but further investigation reveal=
ed
that there are more than twenty graves still remaining in the woods above t=
he
highway. Faron and I believe =
that
this is where Abraham Childers, Revolutionary War Soldier, and his two
grandsons that were killed during the War Between the States, Sergeant Abra=
ham
Childers, Company H, killed 1863, and Corporal James L. Childers, Company H,
killed 1864, are buried. It i=
s also
possible that Abraham’s son, Private Goolsby Childers, Company F, 5th
Kentucky Infantry, is buried there as well. The ceremony to honor President
Jefferson Davis’ 200th birthday is still scheduled for Jun=
e 6th
through June 8th at the president’s birthplace in Fairview,
Kentucky. The Kentucky Divisi=
on
meeting will be held in conjunction with the event. All camp members are urged to atte=
nd the
event if possible. The trip t=
akes
about six hours to make but possibly carpooling could be done to lessen the
expense. My father (and camp
member) Glenn Brown, suggested that the camp do something to honor the birt=
hday
of President Davis. He sugges=
ted
that the camp do a dedication at the Sandlick Cemetery on Memorial Day (May=
24th
to 26th) weekend. =
This
dedication would serve three-fold; it would honor all Confederate soldiers
buried there, it would honor all veterans buried there and would also celeb=
rate
the birthday of President Davis. &nbs=
p;
Another suggestion would be to have a dedication at the Pound Gap
Monument as well (maybe we could do both).=

Comments
Please remember
March 16, 2008, marks the 148th anniversary of the 1st Battle
of Pound Gap. Reports state t=
hat as
many as 600 of our boys and about 740 Yankees, (approximately 134=
0)
fought for 20 minutes to 2 ho=
urs to
gain possession of the summit. The
Gap saw numerous skirmishes and battles but for me it has lasted 148 years.=
History
states it was only a small battle. But to me it was huge after seeing that =
many
reenacters on the field. No o=
ne really
knows how many men were killed or wounded, due to conflicting reports. The fact remains that the battle b=
rought
the WBTS home to the mountains. The
next time you go across the gap think of the men who lived and died on that
mountain following the cause based on faith. It is an important part of our
history and must not be forgotten. Please pray for the sick and the lost and work every day getting closer to God. Keep the faith men for we are on t=
he
frontlines every day. =

that
in all things we work for the glory of God and with a humbled spirit. Ask our gracious God to bless Past=

region. They have asked for p=

Waited
an hour or two this morning to hear from Colonel Giltner, then started to
Salyersville by way of Burning Fork of Licking. Waters very high. Jim Rogers got in over his head. When in three miles of Salyersville
heard that there were 2,000 enemy in the town. Went on further. Capt. Casey and others rode ahead =
and
found the enemy had crossed the river yesterday evening and had not yet
